Odysseus – revised

“No sooner had they swung back and churned the water
with their blades than sweet oblivion sealed Odysseus’
eyes in sleep, delicious and profound, the very counterfeit of death”

Homer – The Odyssey

Odysseus, you see what lies ahead
for you, the suitors, stealing your bread
they lust, lust for your woman, lust for your land
blissfully oblivious you have the upper hand

Athene is in your corner, but she will not win for you
you see success in your future, but you see failure too
within every lion, as every house
some point in time, you’ll find a mouse

Odysseus, eyes sealed in sleep, so delicious and profound
crying out for you, poor Penelope, haunted sleeps
as Homer said, you sleep so sound
but hers a bed soaked, from all she weeps

Odysseus, son of Laertes
soon the Suitors
will fall to their knees
but now, you sleep

I envy the deep sleep, how it grabs you tonight
the very counterfeit of death, holds you so tight
i read as dawn sits on her golden throne
envious of your sleep, wide awake, alone

From one generation to the other

With your overweight son and daughter
I think you oughta
Show them a different perspective to life
But instead you’re disrespecting your wife
And the kids won’t know it’s not appropriate
As they were never taught different
And tens years later
They still don’t know
But they grow
And grow
And hey!
More scumbags
Just like you

Stain on my City

Pigeons living in steel girders under bridges

Travelling on the tram past a scrapyard

A house sized pile of unloved fridges

An overweight man offends my senses

Stains on his tracksuit

A stain on my city

Initially I regret the contempt

I have towards him and his life

We only get one attempt

He wasted his

And still we pay

But we’re not at fault

For his Faults

Life is hard for most

It’s the curse of the gift

But I’ll be damned if I’m gonna carry someone

That expects the lift

If only

I wish

I wish I didn’t do that thing I did

I wish

Who am I trying to kid

If only

If only I didn’t create this fact

If only

I want to go back

Back

Back to the start

Back

To when I had a heart

Again

I wish

If only I could go

Back to the start

Odysseus

“No sooner had they swung back and churned the water with their blades than sweet oblivion sealed Odysseus’ eyes in sleep, delicious and profound, the very counterfeit of death”

Homer – The Odyssey

Odysseus

you see what lies ahead

for you

and the men that steal your bread

And they lust

for your woman and land

and even though

you have the upper hand

still there is  a mouse

existing within a lion

Athene is in your corner

but she will not win for you

and even though

you see success  in your future

you think maybe you might not

have a future

And Penelope

haunted sleeps

a bed soaked

from all she weeps

But tonight on the ship

heading back to Ithaca

you sleep so sound

just as Homer said

so delicious and profound

How I envy the deep sleep

that grabs you tonight

the very counterfeit of death

Odysseus, son of Laertes

soon the Suitors

will fall to their knees

but now

you sleep

and I read of you

wide awake

before dawn sits on her golden throne

envious
