“No sooner had they swung back and churned the water with their blades than sweet oblivion sealed Odysseus’ eyes in sleep, delicious and profound, the very counterfeit of death”

Homer – The Odyssey

you see what lies ahead

for you

and the men that steal your bread

And they lust

for your woman and land

and even though

you have the upper hand

still there is  a mouse

existing within a lion

Athene is in your corner

but she will not win for you

and even though

you see success  in your future

you think maybe you might not

have a future

And Penelope

haunted sleeps

a bed soaked

from all she weeps

But tonight on the ship

heading back to Ithaca

you sleep so sound

just as Homer said

so delicious and profound

How I envy the deep sleep

that grabs you tonight

the very counterfeit of death

Odysseus, son of Laertes

soon the Suitors

will fall to their knees

but now

you sleep

and I read of you

wide awake

before dawn sits on her golden throne
